During my four years at the University of Toronto, I witnessed firsthand what it takes to succeed on the global stage.
My classmate, Ana Bailão, arrived from Portugal at fifteen and never looked back. She didn’t just study textbooks; she paired academic rigor with community leadership and sheer grit. That combination of character and intellect paved her way to becoming Deputy Mayor of Toronto by forty. Like many of our peers, she became a highly resourceful leader because her university years cultivated the “whole person,” proving that resilience, versatility and character matter just as much as test scores.
In Goa, our youth face a challenge that often handicaps them from emulating such examples. An over-reliance on passive, traditional career paths often masks a critical gap in core problem-solving mindsets. To lead tomorrow, our children need a return to what Swami Vivekananda passionately termed a “man-making, character-building” education.
This philosophy is not merely modern; it is a revival of ancient Indian wisdom, which views education as the balanced development of the head, the heart, and the hand. Much like the traditional pursuit of Atma-Shakti (self-power), Vivekananda’s vision demands that we strengthen the human will alongside the intellect. By fostering this inner discipline, we empower students to first master the art of leading themselves—developing the self-awareness and integrity required for true autonomy. This holistic foundation, once internalised, becomes the essential baseline for a robust democracy, where self-governance serves as the prerequisite for active, responsible citizenship.
